Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls

6
  • It is actually very common for owls to use nests built by other species. Great horns also use cavities in trees, cliffs, and ledges for their nests. Great horns generally use one nest per year, as they cause a lot of wear and tear on the nest, although it is possible the they may use it again next year. It is also possible that the ospreys may return the next year and retake the nest.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls
  • On average, great horns lay two eggs, but they can lay one to five eggs. They usually only have one brood per season, although they will lay more eggs if the original clutch is taken or destroyed.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls
  • On average, great horned owls incubate their eggs for about 30 to 37 days.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls
  • Young owlets start fledging around 6 to 8 weeks old.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls
  • Great horned owls are generalists and therefore eat just about anything. They have a wide range of prey, from small rodents, to large birds such as herons. A great horns diet consists of about 90% mammals,10% birds, and herptiles and insects. Owls also get moisture from their prey, so they do not have to drink often.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls
  • Great horns swallow small prey whole, bones and all. They have very strong stomach acid that breaks down the bones to extract important nutrients, and any indigestible parts of the prey are regurgitated as a pellet.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Ospreys

5
  • Ospreys build nests at the tops of trees, and oftentimes on man-made structures, such as telephone poles, service towers, or nest platforms made specifically for it. Established pairs oftentimes return to previous nest sites.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Ospreys
  • On average, ospreys lay three eggs, but they can lay one to four eggs. They only lay one clutch per season, regardless of whether the original clutch is taken or destroyed.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Ospreys
  • Ospreys usually begin laying eggs in late April. On average, they incubate their eggs for about 35 to 42 days.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Ospreys
  • Young osprey chicks start fledging around 7 to 8 weeks old.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Ospreys
  • Ospreys are piscivores, meaning they almost exclusively eat fish. This is how they got the nickname "fish hawk." Ospreys hunt in both fresh and saltwater.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Ospreys

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls & Ospreys

8
  • Yes, both great horns and ospreys are monogamous and generally mate for life. However if one of the pair dies the other will usually find a new mate.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls & Ospreys
  • It is normal for parents to leave the eggs and nestlings every so often. The mother rarely stays away long enough to cause harm. Both great horns and ospreys are able to successfully incubate the eggs in extremely cold weather, and great horn eggs have been recorded to withstand parent absence of 20 minutes at -13 degrees.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls & Ospreys
  • Great horns and ospreys usually lay an egg every couple days until their clutch is complete, but they start incubating as soon as the first egg is laid. The first eggs have a head start and hatch first, although sometimes an egg may not hatch because it wasn't fertilized or the embryo didn't develop properly.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls & Ospreys
  • Only the female incubates the eggs. She has a featherless area on her abdomen called a brood patch, which is specifically designed to keep the eggs warm. The male's job is to bring food for the mother, until the chicks are hatched and old enough that she can also hunt.

  • This is a natural behavior for nestlings. Sometimes, the aggression is essentially play-fighting, a way for them to practice and hone their skills. Other times, especially when food is scarce, aggression can lead to siblicide. Also, if the parents can sense that one chick is doing better than the other, they may focus all their food, attention, and energy into ensuring that the healthy chick survives. The older chicks may be the only one to survive.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls & Ospreys
  • This is common behavior throughout most bird species. They may do this as a heat-saving measure, as a way to reduce fatigue in one leg, or simply just to be comfortable.

Coastal Resources - Wolf Bay Osprey Cam - Great Horned Owls & Ospreys
  • Legally we cannot intervene with these birds without very specific permission as are state and federally protected. Sometimes they are predated on, other times only the stronger siblings survive. While it can be difficult to watch, this is nature and it is survival of the fittest.

  • No. We cannot incorporate any other material into the glass because it will cool at a different rate which will cause stress cracks and/or breakage.

Coastal Arts Center - Hot Shop
  • All of the pieces we have in our shop have taken the glassblowers years to learn how to make, so they are not something we can offer for the Make Your Own class. The object of the class is to experience glassblowing with lots of help from a highly skilled glassblower (because it is not something that can easily be done in the first few attempts- it takes years to build the skills required to pull off even the simplest pieces.) Therefore, no one should try to replicate an exact piece or design as all glass items turn out uniquely different even for an experienced glassblower- which is part of the beauty of this art form.

Coastal Arts Center - Hot Shop
  • Of course! We encourage pictures and always appreciate when you tag us in your photos on Facebook or Instagram.

You may take a more active or passive role based on your physical ability or comfort level.

They are Foley, Fairhope, and only the first Wednesday of the month, Bay Minette.

  • No, you should never feed native wildlife. Feeding wildlife leads to the disruption of their natural behaviors and dependency on humans for food. This in turn becomes a            dangerous situation for the animal as it puts them in harm's way (for example, feeding a pelican fish and then it getting entangled in fishing line.) It is better for them to hunt naturally and eat their wild diet.

  • Yes! The Gulf is their natural habitat, we are the visitors! If you see one don't panic, slowly move towards shore without splashing, flailing, or making excessive noise. Most sharks stay offshore but occasionally they will swim closer. Avoid swimming in areas where schools of fish are present or seabirds are diving. If Lifeguards determine a shark is a threat to the public they can close the water to swimming.

  • As far as treating a jellyfish sting our suggestion is the “beach method” which involves no chemicals. Take a hard surface something like a credit card/room key and scrape against the effected area. The goal of this is to remove any remaining tentacles. Next take wet sand and pack it on top of the affected area and let it sit. This relieves stinging and adds a cooling effect.

Realistically a jellyfish sting is very similar to a bee sting. Pain thresholds are different person to person and pain tends to last for 10-15 minutes. In the case of an emergency: person has difficulty breathing or breaks out in extreme hives all over the body call 911.

    Surf Rescue - Fire Department
  • While it is nearly impossible to predicts this in the open water environment a few factors can help in removing jellyfish or seaweed from the swimming area: Strong winds, strong surf, strong lateral currents, or large storms. When the water is calm & stagnant there is very little to do. Remember this is the open water!
