Orange Beach Shooting Range

The Orange Beach Police Department's pistol range at 25111 Russian Road (see map on this page) is open to the public every other Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., weather permitting and except for holidays, and whether or not any scheduled police training is taking place. The department makes every effort to have the range available to the public. Anytime the range is open, a certified firearms instructor/RSO will be on duty.

The range is a pistol/handgun range only. The maximum shooting distance is 7 yards.

Public Range Information 

The rules and procedures may change depending on the present, on-duty Police Firearms Instructor. All rules and procedures are necessary to ensure that everybody has an equal opportunity to shoot and to maintain a safe shooting environment for all shooters.

  • Targets are provided by the range staff.
  • Closed-toe shoes only - No flip-flops or sandals are allowed at the range.
  • Hearing and eye protection are mandatory.
  • No automatic weapons are allowed, this includes weapons equipped with a Forced Reset Trigger, Binary Trigger or any modification to the weapon that is designed to increase the rate of fire to imitate fully automatic firing of the weapon.
  • No shooting of steel targets is allowed.
  • While on the firing line, any shooter under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Only one minor per adult will be allowed on the line at a time. Each minor/adult pair will use one firing position. All shooters are to remain at their respective firing positions while the line is hot.
  • No Firearms or ammunition sales will be conducted on the premises.

SHOOTING RANGE RULES 

For Civilian Use - Rules are posted at the range as well. 

GENERAL:

  1. Shooters must be 21 years of age, or accompanied by a supervising adult.
  2. Only rim fire and center fire handguns of less than 50 caliber are authorized for use on the range.
  3. Handguns of calibers generally associated with rifle ammunition are prohibited.
  4. Long guns, rifle or shotguns, are prohibited.
  5. Only commercially manufactured ammunition is permitted.
  6. All handguns may be inspected by a Police Officer or Range Safety Officer for appropriateness and/or safety at their discretion.
  7. Violation of Range Rules may result in suspension of Range privileges.

SAFETY:

  1. Always keep a gun pointed in a safe direction (normally down range).
  2. Always keep a gun unloaded until ready to fire.
  3. Always keep your finger off the trigger, until ready to fire.
  4. Guns are to be loaded and unloaded at the firing line only. Guns going to or off the firing line should be holstered, in a case, or carried with the magazine removed, and slide or cylinder opened. Magazines may be loaded in an area designated by the Range Safety Officer.
  5. Report malfunctions (failure to fire, failure to feed, etc.) to a Range Safety Officer for assistance.
  6. Tobacco, alcohol, or drugs are prohibited.
  7. Cell phone usage is prohibited beyond the Range shelter.
  8. Shooters will conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times.
  9. Proper range attire is required. (If in doubt ask a Range Safety Officer)
  10. Shooters are responsible for their guns and ammunition while on the grounds of the Shooting Range.
  11. Upon the command, "cease fire," all shooters will cease fire, place their guns in a holster, case or on the paved firing line with cylinder or slide open and magazine removed.
  12. Shooters must pick up their own brass and any other brass in the vicinity of their shooting position.
  13. No rapid Firing.
  14. Do not point a gun above the mid-point of the rear backstop berm.
